The provision of an Uninterruptible Power Supply System, UPS, needs a great deal of thought for the following reasons;

-Standard UPS systems regularly consume around 12% of their rated power in losses

-Over-rating a UPS may mean losses in excess of 20%

-A UPS with flat batteries requires an extra 20% input power

-Careful design is needed to achieve an N, N+1 or 2N solution

-UPS over 100 kVA should be located in a separate M&E room

-Leading power factor loads on modern servers will cause instability within the UPS unless properly designed

-Kinetic energy systems may be more appropriate than battery-based systems in the larger building

-Correct sizing of the standby generator is essential
